As a result of an adverse event, the clinician experiences a host of physical and psychological symptoms. Physical symptoms include elevated HR and BP, GI upset, and sleep disturbances. The psychological symptoms may manifest as shame, grief, loss of self- confidence, inability to concentrate, guilt, anxiety, and depression. Many clinicians suffer in silence, but it is important to realize that emotional support for CDS is available, and is most effective when provided in the form of peer support. A certified physician coach has the unique ability to provide this support; not only are they a peer to those in healthcare, they also have the skill set necessary to provide these types of conversations.
